Active Shooter Training for Public and Private Schools

Active Shooter Training for Public and Private Schools.

There have been approximately 387 active shooter incidents in schools across America since 1992, but that is not the saddest part. Many of these incidents could have been prevented if teachers, school staff, and even parents were properly trained to identify certain behaviors in the student body that could indicate potential issues.

It all comes down to threat assessment.

Active Shooter Training for Public and Private Schools

While active shooter incidents in schools are rare – between just 1% and 2% of all homicides among school-age children occur on school grounds, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – these highly publicized events are becoming more and more common. It is a sign of an increasingly disturbing violent trend in our school systems.

Violence in Schools

According to a 2013 CDC study of students in grades 9-12 (high school), 8.1% reported being involved a physical fight on school property in the previous 12 months, 5.2% reported carrying a weapon (gun, knife or club) on school property within the previous 30 days, and 6.9% reported being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property within the previous year.

Meanwhile, 7.2% of students surveyed admitted to skipping school at least once in the previous 30 days because they felt unsafe at school.

Threat Assessment

Active shooter events and other instances of targeted violence are rarely impulsive acts. These students rarely “just snap.” Most school-based attacks are planned well in advance and most attackers tend to display certain behaviors, both direct and indirect, that could warn trained faculty members or parents of impending issues. By learning to pick up on these warning signs, educators, school staff, and parents can help prevent these not-so-random acts of violence.
