How to Prevent School Shootings Before They Happen

School Shootings

“These school shootings destroy the community,” says Dr. Frank Robertz, , co-founder of the Institute for Violence Prevention and Applied Criminology.

Every day, 88 Americans are killed by gun violence, and an increasing number of these incidents are occurring in our schools. According to “ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL SHOOTINGS,” a report conducted by Everytown for Gun Safety, there were at least 94 school shootings (23 resulting in at least one death) between December 15, 2012 and December 9, 2014, a two year period following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.

  • 53% took place at K-12 schools
  • 47% took place on a college or university campus

According to Dr. Frank Robertz, , co-founder of the Institute for Violence Prevention and Applied Criminology in Berlin, schools are a natural venue for such violent acts because “adolescents experience the worst slights in school.”

The majority of these incidents (69%) were planned well in advance, and more often than not the students carrying out such acts exhibit certain behaviors – they display certain warning signs that could help school administrators, teachers, and parents identify potential threats and stop school shootings before they happen.

“I think they (shooters) want to get in touch with us,” says Dr. Robertz. “They send us signals along the way.”

  • Most students who carry out these attacks seek out weapons and practice with these weapons prior to the actual event. And many of these students don’t have to go very far to find the weapons they are looking for. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many of the students involved in these shootings (79%) obtained the guns at home, which is not shocking. About a third of U.S. children live in homes with guns.
  • Most students who carry out these attacks talk with others about their ideas and intentions or they record their thoughts in journals, diaries, and even online sources, such as social media, blogs, etc. They make their intentions known, but it is up to us to listen and act on such warnings.

“In my opinion every one occurrence [of school violence] which has happened would have been preventable,” explains Dr. Robertz.

However, without the proper training, these warning signs can easily go unnoticed.
