Recognizing the Warning Signs of Targeted Violence in Schools

Targeted-Violence-Schools

Defender can help you recognize the warning signs of targeted violence.

In 2001, students and parents were asked whether or not they thought a shooting could occur in their community, in their school. 50% of parents with children in grades K-12 and 75% of secondary school students said yes. Since that time, there have been more than 20 school shootings across the country, according to USA Today.

Targeted violence in our schools is on the rise. During the 2009-2010 school year, 91% of middle schools and high schools reported violent incidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If we want these numbers to decrease, it is up to us – all of us – to make a difference: parents, teachers, school staff, and more.

“For parents, school staff, and policymakers to effectively address school crime, they need an accurate understanding of the extent, nature, and context of the problem,” explains a report conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice.

Targeted Violence is Rarely a Spur-of-the-Moment Action

According to research, incidents of targeted violence in schools are rarely ever spur-of-the-moment actions. Most incidents of targeted school violence are well-thought out. Most students who carry out these attacks talk with others about their ideas and intentions, and record their thoughts in journals, diaries, and even online sources, such as social media, blogs, etc. They also seek out weapons and practice with these weapons. These deliberate actions may occur over several days, weeks, months, or even years. There are warning signs and it is up to teachers, school staff, and parents to recognize these warning signs and act accordingly, putting a top to violent behavior before it occurs.
