Threat Assessment and Real-Life Situations
Threat assessment training provides more than just a peace of mind. It ensures you’re ready to handle real-life situations of student violence. When it’s a matter of time, and not a lot of it, it’s important to be equipped with the tools to prevent a disastrous situation. Threat assessment training doesn’t just educate you, it prepares you for the worst.
On October 25th, 2015, two Virginia high school students were found to be planning an alleged school shooting. They were stopped before they could carry out the attack after one of the students threatened violence online. This is one of the many signs of student violence that threat assessment training teaches staff, parents, and the community to recognize and act upon.
Threat Assessment Prevents These Attacks
The knowledge gained from threat assessment training is the key to preventing attacks just like the one prevented in Virginia. Learning the warning signs and how to handle a potentially dangerous student is important. Many students could have died if the student violence plot had gone through. However, many students and staff are now safe because of threat assessment.
There is more to threat assessment than obvious warning signs. Sometimes, it’s too late when these signs are detected. Training to prevent student violence educates staff on the often-looked-over signs and behaviors that can result in violent attacks.
As of October 1st, there have been 45 school shootings in the U.S. in 2015. Threat assessment training lowers this number and keeps students, staff, and communities safe. Parents, teachers, students, and community member should not have to fear violent attacks. With preparation and education, potentially violent students can be identified and stopped before they have a chance to increase that number.
